Planned Works
The Interior Department of the Velocity Interoperability Network publishes a schedule of works affecting shared infrastructure so that every member using a site or route can prepare for any interruption to service. The schedule lists the Department's own inspection and maintenance works together with the works notified to it by members under their obligations.
Interruptions notified on the schedule in advance are excluded from the availability measured under the service standard. Works carried out without the required notice are not excluded, and the interruption is recorded against the member responsible.
The schedule is revised weekly. Members affected by any change to the dates or the expected effect of an entry are notified by email.
- Routine maintenance
- Inspection, testing and servicing by the Department with no effect on service. Entered on the schedule at least five working days in advance.
- Service-affecting works
- Works by the Department that will interrupt or degrade service on a site or route. Entered on the schedule at least twenty working days in advance, and every member using the site or route is notified individually.
- Member works
- Works that a member intends to carry out on or near shared infrastructure, including works on its own plant housed in a data hall. Notified to the Department and entered on the schedule on the same notice as the Department's own works.
- Emergency works
- Works needed at once to restore service or to prevent damage. They proceed without notice and are reported to the Department as soon as practicable; a report to members follows.

Notifying member works
Step 1: Give notice in time
Five working days before works with no effect on service; twenty working days before works that will interrupt or degrade service.
Step 2: State what is proposed
Give the site or route reference from the Register of Sites, a description of the works, the dates and hours proposed and the expected effect on service.
Step 3: Name a responsible person
Give the name and email address of the person within the member organisation who will be in charge of the works while they are in progress.
Step 4: Await entry on the schedule
The Department confirms the dates, or proposes others where they would clash with works already scheduled, and enters the works on the schedule. Works may not begin until they have been entered.
Step 5: Report completion
Notify the Department when the works are complete and service is restored, so that the entry can be closed and the register updated where necessary.
